Summary of If I Stay (from Goodreads)
Just listen, Adam says with a voice that sounds like shrapnel.

I open my eyes wide now.
I sit up as much as I can.
And I listen.

Stay, he says.

Choices. Seventeen-year-old Mia is faced with some tough ones: Stay true to her first love—music—even if it means losing her boyfriend and leaving her family and friends behind? Then one February morning Mia goes for a drive with her family, and in an instant, everything changes. Suddenly, all the choices are gone, except one. And it's the only one that matters. If I Stay is a heartachingly beautiful book about the power of love, the true meaning of family, and the choices we all make.

WHEN I First Read It

I read If I Stay and Where She Went on November 12 and 13, 2011. It was actually right around the time I created my blog. I hadn't really gotten started yet, but I had discovered the book blogging community. I was finding new recommendations every day, and I wanted to know more about the books I kept seeing on all these blogs. I grabbed both from the library and dove in. Because I read them pre-blogging, I have never written about them on So Obsessed With! So, these were re-reads, but this will be the first time I review them.

WHAT I Remember

For If I Stay, I remembered the general premise of the book: there was a car crash, Mia was fighting for her life and deciding if she wanted to stay or go. With Where She Went, I remembered that the story focused on Adam, that it had made me hurt and that I'd been shocked at what happened since the ending of If I Stay.

And honestly, I remember being unimpressed with If I Stay. It had been so hyped at the time I picked it up, and it really didn't live up to my expectations. It wasn't a bad read, but I'd never felt the desire to talk about it on my blog. Where She Went, on the other hand, was the book that moved me. I remember being surprised by my love for the book and caught off-guard by the way Adam stole my heart.

WHY I Wanted to Re-Read

Honestly, I wanted to re-read If I Stay because the movie was being released. It had been a few years since I'd first read Adam and Mia's story, and I wanted to relive it on the page at the same time I was seeing it on the screen. I'd wondered which one would make me more emotional, so I re-read so that I could find out! I'd also been curious if I would like If I Stay more or less than I did the first time around. And would Where She Went still be my favorite? These questions needed answers!

HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

These books exemplify one of the reasons I love re-reading: I loved them both more the second time around than I did the first! I actually saw the movie before I re-read the book, so I had all of those images and scenes in my mind as I re-read If I Stay. I was curious to see what they added, what they left out and how it all made me feel. In a way, I think I felt more emotional watching the movie. Seeing the family on screen and knowing what Mia lost made it feel that much more real to me. But then reading it, I suddenly found myself picturing them in their everyday lives... and the weight of Mia's decision struck me. I'd felt more detached the first time around, but that wasn't the case when I re-read. I think my expectations impacted my first experience with the book, but I also think that the movie deepened my feelings for these characters.

Where She Went, on the other hand, was always the more emotional read for me. I won't talk about what happens in it, just in case you haven't read it. But I will say that I was so invested in Adam's story. I felt so much angst and turmoil over where he was at and what he was doing. I think the fact that I enjoyed If I Stay more when I re-read it also impacted the way I felt about Where She Went. I was more invested in the book than ever before. And I usually hate lyrics in books, but it just worked for perfectly for me with this one. I want to own this CD. Speaking of the music, my favorite change in the movie is the way they improved the band's name. That was a much-needed update. But at the end of the day, this was a great re-reading experience!

WOULD I Re-Read Again

Absolutely! Although I felt a little "meh" on If I Stay the first time around, I grew to love it in a whole new way upon re-reading. Where She Went is still my favorite of the two, but I think I have a deeper appreciation for both books overall after reading them again. I'd given If I Stay three stars and Where She Went four stars the first read, but I bumped both of them up after re-reading. In my rating system, If I Stay now merits a So Enjoyed It and Where She Went a So Loved It. Re-reading success!

A few weeks ago, Kelly and I let you in on the scoop: we're hosting a Re-Read Challenge for 2015! We were so excited about the response, and it sounds like a lot of y'all are planning on signing up. But we know what many of you are probably thinking: "Yeah, yeah... ANOTHER challenge. I don't want some complicated challenge with lots of rules to follow. I don't have time to re-read because I don't want to get behind on reviews posts. I haven't re-read a book since I started blogging."

We have an answer for every excuse! JOIN IN, unless you're a weirdo who doesn't like re-reading...

I don't want some complicated challenge with lots of rules to follow.

Honestly, we don't want to have a lot of rules either. We want it to be as easy as possible for anyone to participate, including ourselves. All you have to do is write an intro post stating WHY you want to join and WHAT books you're hoping to re-read. Then, add it to the sign up linky. After that, just write a post each month recapping what you re-read that month and add it to the linky we'll post on our blogs each month. That's it! You've earned re-read bragging rights for the month. We'll explain it all below, but trust us... it's not difficult.

I don't have time to re-read because I don't want to get behind.

Don't want to take time away from review books and get behind on posts for your blog? We don't either! If you feel like re-reading will set you back, you could write a re-read review. This portion is optional, of course, and not required to participate in the challenge or qualify for the giveaways. But if you're interested, highlight your re-reads with a re-read review. For example, we'll be answering these questions:

WHEN I First Read

WHAT I Remember

WHY I Wanted to Re-Read

HOW I Felt After Re-Reading

WOULD I Re-Read Again

BOOM. You're done! Post it. Add it to the monthly re-read recap post. Tweet with the hashtag #ReRead2015. You've got a post for your blog AND the challenge. Each post you link counts as an entry to our giveaways.

I haven't re-read a book since I started blogging.

Now is the time to start! Relive the magic of your favorite books. Return to your favorite stories, characters and worlds. Remember what it was like the first time around, and see just how fun it can be to re-read.

Tomorrow, I'll post an example re-read review. I'll use the format detailed above, so you can see how easy it is to re-read AND have new content for your blog. In January, I'll share my kickoff post with the books I'm hoping to re-read. The graphic in the sidebar will link back to this post, so you can come back later to sign up!

The Re-Read Challenge Details
  1. This challenge will run from January 1, 2015 - December 31, 2015. The sign-up linky will remain open until the end of January, but join at any time by adding your intro post to any monthly re-read recap linky.
  2. Any genre, length or format of book counts, as long as it's a re-read.
  3. We will have two giveaways - one at the six-month point and one at the end of the year. Giveaway details posted closer to the halfway point!
  4. You don't have to follow our blogs to participate or be entered in the giveaways.
How You Sign Up
  1. Write a post about joining The 2015 Re-Read Challenge on your blog. In the post, include the banner, a link back to our sign-up page, the number of books you'd like to re-read and list some books you're hoping to re-read for the challenge.
  2. Add the direct link to your sign-up post in the linky below.
  3. Optional: Put the challenge button in your sidebar (grab link available at the bottom of the post).
  4. DONE. It's as easy as that to get started.
How You Participate
  1. Re-read some books!
  2. In the first week of each month, we will post a re-read recap on Belle of the Literati and So Obsessed With that includes a linky that will be open all month. Write a post detailing what you re-read the last month, and add the direct link to our linky to be entered in our giveaways.
  3. If you write any re-read reviews (it's totally optional!), add those to the monthly linky for additional entries (one per post) in our giveways.
  4. If you miss a monthly post, just link up your reviews and/or recap in the linky during the next month.

Summary (from Goodreads)
In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him...

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off

Thoughts on Silver Shadows
In my review of The Fiery Heart, I wrote a letter to Sydney and Adrian. Now, I've got a little letter to the author.

Dear Ms. Mead,

While I enjoyed the Vampire Academy series, I have loved the Bloodlines series. There's something Sydney and Adrian that has me so invested in their story - individually and as a couple. I loved them both from the very beginning, even with their flaws and frustrating moments.

I relate to Sydney's rule-following ways and so enjoy her character growth. Seeing her struggle to find her own strength, to know her own mind, has made for such a great reading experience. That's even more true in Silver Shadows. While I was nervous for Sydney, I also had faith in her. She's no damsel in distress! I love the way her brain is always working and how she's gained so much confidence in herself and in her abilities.

I love the way Adrian remains true to himself, to the person first introduced in the Vampire Academy books, while still showing remarkable growth. He's taking himself more seriously, and it's so much fun to see him start to succeed. But I'm not going to lie... I was pretty mad at him at the beginning of this book. It's a good thing he started to get his act together, but he better not fall apart like that again. I JUST CAN'T TAKE IT!

But most of all, these books are about the two of them together. I just enjoy their love story so much! I like how they push each other, balance each other out and make each other better versions of themselves. I feel like this story focuses so much more on the relationship and characters at its center, which makes it my kind of book. I know the plot is still there - it makes for an exciting and gripping read - but I still feel like this series has a different tone than Vampire Academy. And somehow, it just completely works for me.

You've upped the ante in Silver Shadows. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading! And, as I know from past experience, you aren't afraid to make bold (and sometimes heartbreaking) decisions with your stories. I was scared of what was going to happen! I loved seeing some of the threads from the previous books start to come together in this one, and I think it's leading up to a pretty epic finale.

BUT THE ENDING?! AHH! How am I supposed to wait to find out what happens next?! I'm glad it wasn't as cliffhanger-y as it could have been... but I'm impatiently waiting to see how it all ends. GIVE ME MORE SYDRIAN NOW. Please. And thank you!

In case you can't tell, I'm such a fan of this series! From the focus on the characters to the epic romance, these books just work for me. I know some people will be shocked to hear it, but I actually enjoy these books and characters more than I did the Vampire Academy series. Those had a bit more world-building and drama, yes, but I'm way more invested in this couple. And now I just need to read The Ruby Circle already!

So Quotable
“What is it with you and girls, Adrian, dear? Why do they either mean nothing to you or everything? It's always an extreme."
"Because I don't do things in halves, mom. Especially when it comes to love.”

Trying to Wait for 2015

Dec 2, 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. Every week they post a new topic/top ten list and invite everyone to share their own answers. I'm so obsessed with lists - so it makes perfect sense that I'd love this feature!

Since I just recently posted about the sequels I can't wait for read (and it included a number of 2015 releases), I decided to limit myself to either new series or standalones. I don't want to highlight a bunch of books I've already talked about recently!

Top Ten Books I'm Looking Forward to in 2015

YOUNG ADULT

1. I Was Here by Gayle Forman
Anything by Gayle Forman is an auto-buy for me, and I can't wait to get my hands on this new release! Although I'm not a fan of the cover, I have no doubt that I'll be moved by the story inside.

2. Love, Lucy by April Lindner
I've never read anything by Lindner before, but I absolutely love the idea of A Room with a View retelling. It's one of my favorite classics, and I can't wait to see how the author has updated it!

3. I'll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios
I still haven't read anything by Demetrios, but I've been hearing a lot of buzz about this title. It sounds like there is a lot of depth to this story, and I'm so intrigued by the summary. I'm glad it will be released soon!

4. The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord
Technically I've already read this release, but I can't wait for it to be available for everyone. It's just as good as Open Road Summer, and Lord has cemented herself on my "favorite authors" list. I highlighted so many quotes!

5. Things We Know by Heart by Jessi Kirby
I really enjoyed Golden, but that's all I've read by Kirby. I think the reason I'm so excited for this book is that the summary reminds me of the movie Return to Me, which I absolutely love.

6. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
This list wouldn't be complete with the book that is at the VERY TOP of my list of anticipated 2015 releases. I cannot wait to get my hands on this beauty! If I could only list one book, it would be this one.

ADULT

7. First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen
While Garden Spells was my least favorite of Allen's novels, I still really enjoyed it. I'm excited for this companion and can't wait to lose myself in the magic of this story.

8. Girl Before a Mirror by Liza Palmer
I've also already read this book, but can you blame me? Palmer is one of my favorite authors, and she's really outdone herself with Girl Before a Mirror. I'm obsessed with the book and can't wait to push it on everyone!

9. The Mapmaker's Children by Sarah McCoy
I haven't read anything by McCoy, but I totally added this book to my TBR after I saw the cover on Twitter. Then, I read the summary and knew it was a "me" book. Set right before the Civil War, this one sounds amazing.

10. The Virgin's Daughter by Laura Andersen
I still have to read The Boleyn Trilogy, but I can't help adding this new series to my list. An alternative version of history in which Queen Elizabeth has a daughter?! Sign me up!

November 2014: Recap + On My Shelves

Dec 1, 2014

November opened with a bang, and it was full speed ahead for the rest of the month. I still can't believe it's December... I feel like I was just reflecting on the end of the year and setting goals for a new year!

1. Yallfest with Alexa - I'd been dying to spend more time with Alexa after meeting her at BEA this year. When we both mentioned our desire to go to Yallfest, we thought there'd be no way we could work it out. AND THEN EVERYTHING FELL INTO PLACE. Yallfest wasn't our favorite, but I loved every minute I spent with Alexa!

2. Meeting Laini Taylor - Technically, this happened when I was at Yallfest... but I feel like it's exciting enough to merit its own spot on my November loves list. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone series had a huge impact on my love for fantasy, so I was thrilled to get my books signed and fangirl for a moment.

3. Mockingjay, Part I - PEEEEETAAAAAAAA! I've been very vocal about my love for Peeta in the past, so I was anxiously awaiting this movie. This series is one of my all-time favorites EVER, including the last book. I loved everything about the movie and ended up being so glad they split it into two. Time for a re-read now!

4. Happy Thanksgiving! - I still can't believe it's already this time of year, but I love everything this season brings with it. I have so much to be thankful for in my life, and this holiday is a special one. In the same way you wouldn't just tell someone you love them on Valentine's Day, I want to better at giving thanks all year!

“You know not, yet, the sort of love that strikes like a lightning bolt; that clutches hold of you by the heart,
as irrevocably as death; that becomes the lodestar by which you steer the rest of your life. I would not wish such a love on anyone, man or woman, for it can make your life a paradise, or it can destroy you utterly.”
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

“This is a long goodbye, yet not time enough. I have no aptitude for this. I cannot learn this.

1. Do re-reads change my thoughts on a book? by Asheley from Into the Hall of Books - I've had re-reading on the brain lately because Kelly and I have been finalizing all of the details for The 2015 Re-Read Challenge. I devoured this post as soon as Asheley published it, and I knew immediately it would be in my monthly recap post. I've experience this myself, and it's one reason I wish more people would re-read!

2. STOP Apologising! by Cait from Paper Fury - I could draw little hearts and stars all over this post. I felt like Cait was reading my mind. I've talked about this before with blogging friends but always hesitated to write a post about it. Now there's no need! I'm always sad when I see people apologizing for "not posting enough." I love blogging, but it's a hobby. Real life always comes first, and there's no need to say sorry when it does.

3. Blogging How You Want and Why It's Important by Sydney from Utterly Bookish - I have Oh, the Books! to thank for helping me discover this blog and post. I love going through their weekly recaps and findings things I've missed! This post caught my eye because Sydney articulated some important truths. While I love blogging tips and tricks, I also think it's so important to remember that "blogging is a personal experience." PREACH.

4. Serious Talk: Friendship by Cassie from Books With Cass - I rarely cry when I'm reading books, so you're probably not surprised that I've never cried reading a blog post... until now. This post from Cassie brought me to tears! If you'd told me a few years ago that blogging would introduce me to people I'd one day call some of my best friends, I would have thought you'd lost your mind. But now, I can only echo Cassie's post. It's the truth!

Favorite Song: "Hate to See Your Heart Break" by Paramore feat. Joy Williams on Paramore: Self-Titled Deluxe
This song combines two of my favorite artists, so it's no surprise that I haven't been able to stop listening.
I can't get it out of my head! I keep playing it on repeat, over and over again... AHHH!

Jane the Virgin, Episodes 1-7 - I wrote off this show when I first heard about it, but then I decided to give it a shot based on Ellice's recommendation. And oh, I'm glad that I did! This is my favorite new show on TV. It's funny, heartwarming and just so dadgum charming. I can't get enough! It sounds ridiculous, but it just works.

Laggies (2014) starring Keira Knightley, Chloë Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell - I absolutely love Keira Knightley, so this movie was on my radar as soon as I saw the trailer. It wasn't in many theaters near me, but I found it. It was quirky and odd, but so hilarious. I loved it! If you like independent movies, give it a shot!

Beyond the Lights (2014) starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker and Minnie Driver - I think Gugu Mbatha-Raw is stunning, and I was so intrigued by this movie after I read this Entertainment Weekly article about her transformation into a pop star. The movie was fabulous! It was emotional and so culturally relevant.
